Your Arrival at Princess Juliana International Airport
Princess Juliana (SXM) is one of the Caribbean's most famous airports, and also one of the most manageable. The terminal is compact, the arrivals process is generally smooth, and you'll be outside breathing the warm island air faster than you might expect. Here's what happens between touchdown and exit:
Complete your arrival card
Most flights into SXM distribute a Sint Maarten Embarkation/Disembarkation (ED) card during the flight. Fill it in before you land. It saves time at immigration. You'll need your passport details, flight number, and the address of your first night's accommodation.
Passport control
Follow signs to Immigration. Lines move quickly at SXM, and most passengers clear in 10 to 20 minutes. US, Canadian, and EU passport holders typically have dedicated lanes. Have your passport, return ticket reference, and accommodation address ready to present to the officer.
Collect your luggage
Baggage carousels are just past immigration. Check the display boards for your flight number and carousel assignment. SXM is a single-terminal airport, so the process is direct and clearly signed. Luggage typically arrives within 15 to 25 minutes of landing.
This is a good moment to switch on your phone and send a quick message to our team confirming your arrival, especially useful if your flight ran early or late.
Clear customs and exit
After baggage claim, proceed through Customs. Most leisure travellers walk straight through the green (nothing to declare) channel. If you're carrying items subject to declaration, use the red channel. Once through, follow the exit signs, and you'll emerge directly into the arrivals hall where our representative will be waiting.
We track your flight. Ocean Elite monitors all inbound flights in real time. If your flight is delayed, diverted, or arrives early, our representative will already know. You never need to worry about anyone not being there. We'll be there.
Meeting Your Ocean Elite Representative
The moment you step out of the arrivals hall, your Ocean Elite experience begins. Here's exactly how the meet-and-greet works:
Look for the Ocean Elite sign
As you walk out of the arrivals hall exit, look immediately to the right of the exit doors. Your Ocean Elite representative will be standing in the designated meet-and-greet area holding a sign clearly displaying your name and the Ocean Elite Car Rental logo.
Our representatives wear the Ocean Elite uniform, a navy polo shirt with the company logo, so they're easy to spot even in a busy arrivals area.
Short, comfortable transfer to our lot
Our representative will take care of your luggage and escort you to our dedicated vehicle lot, a quick 2-minute walk or courtesy shuttle ride from the terminal exit. No long treks, no shuttle buses shared with dozens of other passengers, no waiting around.
While you walk, your representative will confirm your booking details and answer any quick questions, so by the time you reach the lot, you're already oriented.
Meet your vehicle
Your vehicle will be clean, fully fuelled, and positioned ready for handover. Our team member will introduce you to the car: fuel type, dashboard controls, air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, and any vehicle-specific details you should know.
We'll also run through the best routes from the airport to your hotel, point out any road features worth knowing (speed bumps are a fact of life in Sint Maarten, and we'll warn you about the notable ones), and share a local tip or two if you'd like them.
Can't find us? If for any reason you exit the arrivals hall and don't immediately see our representative, don't worry, just call us directly at +1 (721) 554-7772. We're always within 2 minutes of the terminal. Do not accept rides from unofficial taxi operators who may approach you in the arrivals area.
Smooth Paperwork Checklist
The paperwork at pickup is quick, usually 10 to 15 minutes. Having everything ready before you land makes it even faster. Pull these out of your bag before you reach our representative:
Vehicle inspection: before signing the rental agreement, take a few minutes to walk around the vehicle with our team member and confirm that all pre-existing marks or scratches are noted on the condition report. Take your own photos too, since it takes two minutes and gives everyone complete peace of mind.
Returning Your Car
We want the end of your trip to be just as smooth as the beginning. Here's how to make the vehicle return as quick and painless as possible.
When to leave for the return
Sint Maarten's roads can be unpredictably busy, particularly around Simpson Bay, Airport Road, and the causeway during morning and late-afternoon peak hours. We recommend the following buffer times before your scheduled flight:
Leave your hotel or last stop
For international departures, this gives you comfortable time to return the vehicle, complete the inspection, and check in without rushing.
Stop at the petrol station near the airport
Fill the tank before returning. There's a petrol station on Airport Road just minutes from our lot. Returning with a full tank means no fuel surcharge and a faster sign-off. Keep the receipt.
Drive to our return location
Return the vehicle to our lot near Princess Juliana Airport, the same location where you picked up. Our team will direct you to the return bay. If you need specific directions on the day, call us and we'll guide you in.
Final inspection walkthrough
A team member will walk around the vehicle with you to check its condition against the pickup report. This typically takes 5 to 10 minutes. If everything is in order, you'll sign off and receive a return confirmation on the spot.
Deposit refunded, you're free to fly
Once the return is signed off with no outstanding charges, your cash security deposit (if you paid one) is refunded to you in full on the spot. If you paid by card, there's no deposit to return. We'll transfer you back to the terminal (a quick 2-minute ride) and you're on your way.
What to check before handing back the keys
- Fuel tank is full, or as close to full as you can manage before arrival;
- All personal belongings removed from the vehicle, including items in the boot, glove box, and door pockets;
- Both sets of keys (if applicable) ready to hand over;
- Any damage that occurred during the rental that you haven't already reported, since it's always better to bring it up proactively;
- Phone chargers, sunglasses, and anything you may have placed in seat pockets, as these are the most commonly forgotten items.
After-hours returns: if your flight departs very early in the morning or late at night, please arrange an after-hours return when you collect the vehicle. Vehicles left in the return area without a pre-arranged after-hours agreement cannot be formally accepted until the next business day, and your liability continues until a staff member completes the inspection.
Useful Numbers & Local Information
Save these before you travel. The island is easy to navigate, but it's always good to have the right numbers one tap away.
A few things worth knowing about driving on the island
- Drive on the right. Sint Maarten follows the same traffic flow as the US and continental Europe, with traffic flowing on the right-hand side of the road.
- Speed bumps are everywhere. Sint Maarten's roads are well-maintained but liberally decorated with speed bumps, particularly in residential areas, near schools, and around beach accesses. Take them slowly, and your suspension will thank you.
- Speed limits. The general speed limit in built-up areas is 40 to 60 km/h. On open roads, 80 km/h. Watch for posted signs as limits change frequently.
- The French side uses km/h. Once you cross into Saint-Martin, all road signs switch to kilometres per hour. Speed limits: 50 km/h in towns, 70 km/h on open roads.
- Roundabouts. On the Dutch side, entering traffic yields. On the French side, vehicles already in the roundabout have priority. Both sides have roundabouts, so pay attention to which rules apply.
- Parking at Maho Beach. The beach adjacent to the airport runway is a famous spectacle, with planes landing just metres overhead. It's spectacular, but parking is limited and enforcement is active. Our team can advise on the best spots when you collect your car.
